Executive Board Member Ms. Salma Fikry attended a Roundtable Meeting entitled “Exploring the Contours of Democracy in Maldives”, organized by WISCOMP, Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace (WISCOMP), an initiative of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility (established with the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the Dalai Lama). WISCOMP is a training and research initiative which seeks to empower voices and build synergy between the academia, voluntary sector and policy makers in South Asia.
WISCOMP conducts a series of talks and seminars on the theme “Experiments with Democracy in South Asia”, seeking to engage scholars and practitioners in sharing knowledge, experience and as a forum for networking. The beginning of the WISCOMP series was marked by a roundtable entitled “Searching for Peace in Afghanistan: collaborative possibilities for Youth in Peace building”. The second was a symposium on Democratic Transitions in Nepal. This year, WISCOMP roundtable was dedicated to “Exploring the Contours of Democracy in Maldives”.
The roundtable was attended by leading Indian dignitaries from the diplomatic, military, education and media sectors. High Commissioner to the UK and Great Britain, Ms. Farahanaz Faisal and High Commissioner to India, A.Azeez Abdulla as well as the Deputy High Commissioner designate to India Ms. Khadeeja Ibrahim participated in the roundtable. Maldives was represented by a number of NGOs and representatives from the media.
